LAI Srl supplies gas engines for cogeneration, fueled by natural gas, biogas, biomethane and syngas, in a power range from 20 to 2,000 kWe to meet the needs of different applications: farms with anaerobic digestion plants, industries looking to generate their own energy, landfill operators with biogas collection systems, and biomethane upgrading plants. Choosing the right engine depends on a range of technical factors—including the quality and composition of the available gas, installed capacity, expected annual operating hours, maintenance requirements and spare parts availability—which our technical department assesses in detail before making a proposal, comparing the available options and selecting the one that offers the best balance of performance, reliability and lifecycle costs.

For capacities ranging from 20 to 300 kWe, LAI has developed its own gas engine based on Deutz D-series diesel engines, extensively modified to run on biogas and natural gas. Modifications include replacing the fuel system with a gas train and dedicated mixer, optimizing the compression ratio for gas operation, installing an ignition system with timing that varies according to the methane content of the gas, and fitting a lambda control system to manage the stoichiometric mixture and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.
