Electrical and Control Panels for Biogas and Cogeneration Plants
Custom automation: PLC programming, remote monitoring and upgrades to existing systems
LAI Srl designs and manufactures electrical panels and automation systems in-house for biogas, cogeneration and gas treatment plants, covering the full range of applications: from small plants with a single cogeneration unit to complex systems with multiple engines, safety flares, scrubbers, RTOs and landfill biogas collection stations. Developing our automation in-house—rather than relying on standard off-the-shelf solutions—allows us to tailor the control system to each plant’s specific needs, ensure full integration across all components and provide customers with a single point of technical responsibility for the entire control platform.
At the heart of every LAI control panel is a state-of-the-art PLC—Siemens S7 or Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, depending on the customer's preference—programmed by our technical department with firmware developed over years of experience across dozens of operating plants. The control logic manages the sequential start-up and shutdown of components in accordance with validated safety procedures; automatic adjustment of engine load based on gas availability and quality; all electrical and mechanical protections required by applicable regulations; engine temperature and cooling; supervision of the gas purification system, with an interface to online analyzers; and all safety interlocks required by the plant's environmental permits.
The system supports standard industrial communication protocols—Modbus RTU/TCP, Profibus DP, OPC-UA and DNP3—for integration with SCADA systems or third-party energy monitoring platforms. Any plant equipped with a LAI control panel can be monitored remotely over a secure VPN connection, with real-time access to the operator panel, a complete timestamped alarm history, process parameter trends, automatic energy production data logging and exportable reports for GSE incentive reporting.
This feature is particularly valuable for operators managing multiple sites across a wide area: it reduces the need for site visits, helps identify potential issues before they develop into faults, and enables maintenance to be planned based on historical data. We offer revamping services to replace obsolete control panels at existing plants: assessment of the current system, design of the new panel, installation with minimal disruption to operations, and staff training on the new systems.
